From 1875 to 1881 the first train tracks were laid into the city of Merida and the station which is now the university art school was constructed in x. The neighborhood that grew around the train tracks became known as La Plancha and the residential area adjacent to the east became know as Chen Bech (pozo de codorniz) named after the cenote on which the market is now built on 57 & 44. The main purpose of the railroad was to transport henequen to the port of Sisal. The warehouses are still in use but many are becoming lofty homes and the rail yard is a major project or renovation for a public green park with museums and an amphitheater for open air concerts. Chen Bech is a trending neighborhood where artists and expats are restoring homes that are still less expensive than in centro historico west of the La Plancha. Chen Bech still retains its village atmosphere and new restaurants and bars are moving in to service the new art students and new residents.
Our Casa Coco Chen Bech was renovated in 2020 and has just become available for holiday rentals. The art world owners live in New York and Portugal. They created the home to be a tranquil and light filled space. When you open the front door you can see through the house past the little patio gardens, across the long lap pool to the 2 bedrooms at the end of the property. The third bedroom is at the front of the house. Casa Coco is well curated with a minimalist approach to space, featuring beautiful appliances with a few rustic furnishing juxtaposed with modernist design.
