The Casa Ermita is recommended by Sara Ruffin Costello at T Magazine and Joanna Weinberg at Conde Nast Traveler UK.
This very early colonial house is in one of Merida´s oldest barrios. It´s just off the park of The Hermitage of the Safe Journey or L´Ermita de Santa Isabel. It´s a delightful one bedroom half a block from the park, botanical garden and church. The house has been featured in the LA Times, Taschen´s Living in Mexico and Rizzoli´s Casa Mexico: Living in Merida and the Yucatan.
This 17th century house has been simply restored to house an eclectic collection of antique furniture, ceramics and art. The gardens have several gurgling fountains and an old ruin where you can have your meals and relax in the shade. The old brick street, one of the last in Merida, is closed to traffic on sunday for the biciruta. You can walk, hitch a ride on a horse and buggy or uber to the gran plaza 7 blocks away.
The living room is a large gallery. There is a old huge bakery table and old store vitrines filled with curiosities and ceramics. There is a little sitting room off the patio with history and cook books. The bathroom has a large tub and shower. The large kitchen is outside in the patio. You can have a dip in the shady pool and sunbathe on the roof terrace. The garden has many tropical fruit trees and different jasmines that scent the night air. Ermita is a seductive little house in an area where the neighbors sit out on the sidewalk and chat after dark.
