El Portico de la Candelaria was featured in Vogue. Recommended by T Magazine & Conde Nast Traveler.
The nearby chapel of the Candelaria lends its’ name to this luxurious home designed by Josue Ramos. The shady central courtyard has a towering ceiba tree that is sacred to the Maya. Its’ gurgling fountain creates a cool respite from the sun drenched city. El Portico was recently photographed by Tim Street Porter for Casa Mexico: At home in Merida and the Yucatan a new decoration book published by Rizzoli with text by Annie Kelly.
In the old 18th century part of the house you will find the living room, a guest bedroom and the arched portico. The beautiful mosaic tile floors are from the 1930´s but the antique wood doors and beamed ceilings and stone columns are all original. The portico is perfect for drinks or napping in the afternoon. There is a whimsical outdoor bathroom in the courtyard created around the old water cistern that collected rain from the rooftops.
On the far side of the courtyard is the old tejaban House. The Marseilles tile covered kitchen has been completely modernized and makes for perfect entertaining. Beyond the kitchen is the swimming pool with a patio and garden that features another cool shaded seating area out of doors. Above the kitchen is the tejaban guest room with a balcony overlooking the pool. It features a view of the cathedral on the main square 4 blocks away. This peaked roof room with its’ natural terracotta tiles and plastered walls is a serene retreat from site seeing. This lovely room has a large modern bathroom and air conditioning.
Across the elevated walkway is the Master bedroom suite that feels like a giant colonial tree house. The double windows open onto the highest branches of the ceiba tree where many tropical birds visit in the mornings. Opposite is the private terrace that has an impressive view of 7 nearby colonial churches and is ideal for sunbathing or stargazing. It will be hard to remove yourself from the luxury of the oversized tub in the spacious and light filled master bathroom. Luckily there’s room for two.
